I run across a good bit of material that I think would be beneficial to others, but may not fit into the categories or goals of this site. This material shared in a quick blog post but don’t get added to the permanent pages of the site.

Family Leadership - Biblical Manhood

Practical Tips for Leading Your Family

Family leadership at times can be a bit ambiguous. As Christian men, we know we should be leading our families in the pursuit and worship of Christ. But, if we were honest with each other it feels at times as if we were given a mission and then dropped behind enemy lines with little to no supplies and zero direction.

I believe the best thing we can do for our families is personally seek Christ with all our hearts (studying, praying, worshipping, etc.) and allow Him to change us. We cannot teach our wives and children things we do not know ourselves, nor show them the beauties of Christ and His gospel that we haven’t seen. Read more

Helpful Books on Parenting

*UPDATED* Below is a list of books on Christian parenting I have either read or gotten a strong referrals for from men I trust. They are taken from a larger list of “Recommended Reading” covering topics on marriage, parenting, manhood, doctrine/theology, and Christian living. Disclaimer: Just because I recommend a book for reading does not necessarily mean that I agree with every single premis or view the author takes up. My recommendation comes based on the fact that the helpful, Christ-centered views contained within the book outweigh any views I may personally disagree with.

Please feel free to leave a comment suggesting books on the topic of parenting that will help others grow in their relationship with Christ and their families. Please list the title, author, and a few brief thoughts on how the book has helped you in your parenting.

New Content 1.6.12

The “Audio Messages” page for this site was down for a couple of weeks while I did some updating and rearranging. That page is now back online and most (not all) the messages are back. I’ll keep working on it. :)

“A Call To Pray” – message from Matt Chandler.  This is one of the best messages I have heard on the topic of prayer. It was so encouraging. As we see God’s love for us, as our Father, and His desire for us to pray, prayer becomes a joy instead of a burden.

“Christless Christianity” – book by Michael Horton. A great book that points out some of the flaws in the American church, where those errors arose, and how we, as Believers, can focus on Christ and His work accomplished for us.

BibleArc.com – John Piper’s method for studying the Bible involve a system called “arcing”. This site is dedicated to showing how to integrate this method into your Bible study habits.

“How Manhood and Womanhood are Different” – Video with John Piper and Darrin Patrick.

White Horse Inn – Website for theological resources and discussion.

Advent Season Devotional Guide

The Advent season is a time for reflecting and focusing on the realities that are ours in Christ as a result of His first coming into human history as a man. It is easy in our culture to get wrapped up in all the hustle, noise, pageantry, and commercialism of it all. I know, I did it for years. That’s why I search every year for great resources that will help me, as a dad, keep my family focused on Christ and still enjoy the traditions and togetherness and gifts of the season.

The guide that I have provided is something that I ran across at the Village Church’s website. Most of the personal and family devotions come from their guide. My family and I haven’t gone through this particular guide together, but I read through it and trust the leadership at that church. I think we and everyone else will benefit greatly from it. I also added a few things to it that I will be doing with my family. So, I wanted to put it all together and offer it to other families for this holiday season.

It’s a little different than your traditional Advent devotional that would normally focus the whole 4 weeks on Christ’s Messianic prophecies and His birth. This guide goes through the prophecies, His birth, His death and resurrection, and our hope in a Heavenly Kingdom to come. It helps us understand not only how Christ came (as a baby boy) but also why He came and what we have to look forward to because of His coming.

It also includes references to stories from “The Jesus Story Book Bible”. If you have small children, I highly recommend this Bible as a tool to help you point every story in the Bible to Christ!

Biblical Parenting – Family Conference Audio

This has turned out to be one of my favorite parenting series form Voddie Baucham. His passion for the Word of God and his desire to see parents (especially men) step into the roles God has called them to is unmatched. Whether you agree with everything he says or not, he always points to Scripture as the supreme authority and inspires you to grow in your relationship with God, grow as a spouse, grow as a parent, and grow as a leader in your church.

Click on the series title below and there you can either listen online or download the messages. I hope they encourage you as much as they have me.

Family Conference Series

New on the Website – Resources

I have recently found two blog series that I love. The posts come from men whom, as far as I can tell by their content and web presence and pastoral positions, I trust. Dave Bruskas is a Mars Hill campus pastor who has raised 4 daughter, so of course his series is about parenting daughters. Scott Thomas is president of the Acts 29 Network and has raised two boys. Both men have their children out of the house or getting close to being all gone. That means they are now where I will be in about 10-12 years.

I love it when men of God, who are further along in the battle field of biblical parenting, take time to turn around and yell out warnings, cautions and advice to those of us striving to please God in stewarding the gifts He has given us. I am thankful for these guys and believe their content is a great addition to this site.

Grudem on Manhood and Womanhood – Audio

This is one of my favorite messages on the topic of biblical manhood and womanhood. Grudem does such a good job of explaining the doctrines set forth in Scripture on the roles of men and women. Biblical male headship is definitely under attack in our culture. This man and this message have helped me understand what male headship is and how I should respond to the Word. Male headship is more about loving, self-sacrificial leadership than authority. I am grateful to Dr. Wayne Grudem (and others) for his work in this area and helping us understand what God expects of us.

I am constantly trying to add content to the website that is relevant to the site’s goals and helpful to others. Since there is no way to subscribe to individual pages for changing content, the best way I know to inform people of an update is to send out a periodical post with the new content.

Resources for Parents at Christmas

I try hard to do the best job I can of making sure my kids not only enjoy the holiday season, but know what it’s all about. That leads me to do a good bit of research. With so many tools online for Christian parents, we really have no excuse not to lead & teach our kids well. I’ve put together a short list of a few links that have helped my wife and I throughout the Christmas/Advent season.
